The
simplest way to stop snacking starts first thing in the morning. Here's
how to encourage healthier eating habits, all day long.
We've all started our day with a nutritionally blah granola bar, even when we have the best intentions of acting on one of the billion healthy breakfast ideas we've spotted on Pinterest. Hey, it happens. But a new study published in Nutrition Journal suggests that we should pay more attention to one key component: protein.
Researchers at the University of Missouri looked at young women who consumed what they called a "normal" protein breakfast (13g of protein), a high-protein breakfast (35g of protein), or no breakfast at all. Compared to skipping the morning meal altogether, both breakfasts reduced cravings for sweet and savory foods later in the day. But the high-protein group experienced the greatest craving-combating effects.
"Dietary protein has been well documented to improve appetite control," write the study authors. And while you've probably noticed that protein makes you feel full, the study also found that protein boosts your levels of dopamine, giving you that "mmm, that was good" feeling. (Also known as "reward." Also know as "less reason to seek out more food.")
